Michael Barnes

Hailing from Illinois, Michael Barnes is our newest artist to show here at Brumfield's Gallery.

'A Race to the End'

We are especially excited to be showing an American printmaker and hope to continue on with this trend in the future.

'The Crossing'

Barnes works with lithographs to create these dark and peculiar scenes.  Offbeat and certainly uncommon, the artist sets out to create cold, empty scenes populated by an isolated figure.  Each character appears disjointed and troubled by ambiguous external forces, drawing viewers in to make their own conclusions about the scene.

'Mocking the Omen'

You can see all of the works we received from Barnes on our website's inventory.  The three pieces you've seen here are about to be framed, so stop by the gallery soon to see them in person.

Leave us a comment and tell us what you think of the new pieces too!

New Additions

We've recently changed things around a bit here at the gallery.  Here's a peek at what's up on the walls.

(Left to right: 'Wedding Belles', 'Night Divers', and 'The Casual Departure'.)

We acquired four paintings (the three above and one below) from the newest artist to be added to the gallery, Shannon Richardson.

('Little Girl, One Day You'll Be Fine'.)

We also moved these 'Mini Beasts' by Jola Spytkowska to the front.  Each little animal/object is also a trinket box.

They are (left to right): Polly, Devilpan, Dorothy, Edgar, and Ratty.  They're just dying to say hello!

You can also view the pieces individually on our website.  Under the inventory search, scroll down to Jola Spytkowska and that's where those little guys should be hiding.

We also received the two most recent paintings from Molly Hill.  The one above is 'Speaking Gobbledy Gook,' and the one below is 'Fish Gotta Swim.'

To top it all off, our storefront received a makeover as well!  We've removed the awnings and added some signage.  We're quite pleased with the results.

Stop by and have a look at all the changes for yourself!

We're open 10 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday and 12 - 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

See you soon!

Corinna Button Exhibition Opening

Tomorrow night is the opening for newest exhibition from Corinna Button.

Originally from England, Button has recently moved to Chicago, allowing Brumfield's Gallery to host, for the first time, a solo show featuring her large-scale work.

The show will include the two series of works that Button is currently working on.  The first, titled "Idols" features large portraits of female figures in composed, indifferent, and isolated states of being.  The figures are meant to represent the fascination with, and inaccessibility to, our culture's revered pop icons.

The second series explores a theme that Button has long been inspired by.  Set in groups of three or more, Button depicts women in scenes of social interaction and various relationships.  Button has long been interested in the way these cliques portray the nature of secrets, thoughts, and intimacy between individuals in a group setting.

As always, Button works in an artistic style that has become all her own.  The artist employs several methods, using layers upon layers of medium and technique to achieve rich and textured artworks.  The results are unusual blends of printmaking, painting, collage, and other techniques that give Button's work its signature look.

Corinna Button's exhibition opening will be on Saturday, May 4 from 6 - 9 p.m. here at Brumfield's Gallery.  If you'd like to see her work, you can find it on the inventory on our website.

We hope to see you there!
